What is the IXPE Foam?

IXPE, fully named Irradiation Cross-linked Polyethylene Foam, also known as electron-beam cross-linked polyethylene foam. It is a high-performance closed-cell polymer foam material.

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is adopted as the main raw material, mixed with foaming agents and functional additives. After extrusion and sheet forming, the semi-finished sheet passes through an electron accelerator. High-energy electron beams trigger physical cross-linking to form a stable three-dimensional network molecular structure, without adding chemical cross-linking agents. Then the sheet goes through continuous high-temperature foaming to form uniform, tiny and independent closed cells.

Different from chemically cross-linked XPE foam, IXPE relies on physical irradiation instead of chemical agents to complete cross-linking, which is the core difference between the two materials.

Main Characteristics of IXPE

1. Ultra-fine and uniform closed-cell structure

Its internal bubbles are delicate, consistent in size, and the surface is smooth and flat. The closed-cell structure leads to extremely low water absorption, effectively preventing water and moisture penetration.

2. Excellent elasticity and compression recovery

IXPE features high resilience. After long-term extrusion, it can quickly return to the original thickness without permanent deformation, far better than ordinary XPE and EPE foam.

3. Outstanding shock absorption and sound insulation performance

The dense closed cells can absorb impact energy and block sound transmission, achieving stable vibration damping and noise reduction effects.

4. Good thermal insulation performance

Static air sealed inside cells slows heat exchange, making IXPE an ideal thermal insulation material within -40℃ ~ 80.

5. Environment-friendly, non-toxic and low VOC

No residual chemical cross-linking agents. It is odorless, complies with RoHS, REACH and international environmental standards, and can be recycled.

6. Great processing adaptability

It supports hot forming, laminating, precision die-cutting, and can be compounded with aluminum foil, fabric, adhesive tape and other materials.

7. Strong weather and aging resistance

It resists acid, alkali and general chemical solvents, and maintains stable performance under long-term working conditions.

Application Fields

1. Construction & Home Decoration Industry

The most common use is as acoustic underlay for SPC, LVT and laminate flooring to reduce walking noise. It is also applied for wall sound insulation, pipeline anti-condensation thermal insulation, floor vibration isolation.

2. New Energy & Automotive Industry

Widely used in automobile interior: door panel cushioning, roof sound insulation, seat padding, air duct lining. For new energy vehicles, IXPE serves as buffer and insulation material for battery modules, realizing lightweight, shock absorption and thermal protection.

3. Consumer Electronics Industry

Used as shock-absorbing lining for mobile phones, notebooks, precision instruments. Anti-static modified IXPE can package semiconductors and electronic components to avoid collision damage during transportation.

4. Sports & Daily Consumer Goods

High-grade yoga mats, fitness mats, floating water mats, shoe midsole cushion layers, maternal and infant soft mats.

5. High-end Protective Packaging

Buffer packaging for precision equipment, medical devices, fragile high-end products replacing traditional EPE foam.

6. Medical Industry

Soft cushion materials for orthopedic supports, medical pads, owing to its non-toxic and skin-friendly property.

Core Advantages Compared with Similar Foams

✅ Versus XPE foam:

IXPE has finer cells, smoother surface, better elasticity, lower odor, superior aging resistance and stable compression performance. No chemical cross-linking residue, more suitable for high-end environmentally friendly products. The only disadvantage is higher production cost.

✅ Versus EPE (pearl cotton):

IXPE owns permanent three-dimensional cross-linked structure. It does not easily crease or collapse after repeated compression, while EPE is non-crosslinked and prone to permanent deformation.

✅ Versus EVA foam:

IXPE is lighter, softer, lower density and easier for thermal forming, with better shock absorption at low density.

Development Prospect

Against the background of global carbon neutrality and continuous upgrading of environmental protection requirements, IXPE market demand keeps growing steadily.

1. The rapid expansion of new energy vehicle industry becomes the key driving force. Automakers are continuously replacing traditional heavy rubber and plastic materials with lightweight, low-VOC IXPE.

2. The flooring industry maintains stable demand. As high-end rigid flooring becomes popular, IXPE acoustic underlay has become standard matching accessories.

3. Downstream industries put forward higher requirements for material safety, pushing manufacturers to phase out low-grade foams. More brands select IXPE to upgrade product quality.

4. Technology innovation is ongoing. Enterprises develop flame-retardant, anti-static, antibacterial and high-temperature resistant modified IXPE to expand usage in batteries, electronics and medical fields.

Challenges still exist: the production equipment investment of electron beam irradiation line is high, leading to higher raw material price than XPE. In the future, with the popularization of irradiation production equipment and large-scale mass production, the cost gap will gradually narrow.

In summary, as a kind of eco-friendly high-performance polyolefin foam, IXPE will penetrate more industrial and consumer sectors and have broad long-term development space.
