XPE, or Cross-Linked Polyethylene foam, has emerged as the gold standard for outdoor pads, from simple sit-upons to expedition-grade sleeping mats. What Makes XPE Different?
To understand why XPE is superior, one must understand the "cross-linking" process. Standard polyethylene foam (PE) consists of long polymer chains that slide past each other. XPE foam, however, is manufactured using a process that chemically bonds these polymer chains together into a three-dimensional network (a process called cross-linking).

This structural change at the molecular level transforms the physical properties of the material. It makes the foam significantly more resistant to compression (it doesn't "bottom out" easily), more resistant to tearing, and highly resistant to moisture absorption. It creates a closed-cell structure that is intrinsically waterproof, unlike open-cell foams which act like sponges.
